Featured Artist: Shirley Horn

Washington, D.C. native Shirley Horn

A superior ballad singer and a talented pianist, Shirley Horn is a legend who has set a standard of excellence in jazz music with her sheer grace and artistry as both a jazz vocalist and pianist. She released her first album, Embers and Ashes, in 1960 and has recorded over twenty albums since that time. But it was Miles Davis who was responsible for bringing her to New York City after hearing her first album. Ms. Horn started dazzling audiences when she began opening at the Village Vanguard for Mr. Davis. After the early 60s, Ms. Horn and Mr. Davis diverged musically, but decades later, in 1991, they collaborated on Ms. Horn’s critically acclaimed album You Won’t Forget Me. Some of Ms. Horn’s past albums include Here’s to Life (a collaboration with arranger John Mandel), I Love You, Paris, Light Out of Darkness (A Tribute to Ray Charles), and The Main Ingredient.

A native of Washington, D.C., her last six albums have been nominated for Grammy Awards for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. In addition to Mr. Davis, Ms. Horn has recorded and performed with a variety of talented musicians, including Wynton Marsalis, Roy Hargrove, Buck Hill, Branford Marsalis, Toots Thielsman, Steve Novosel, Steve Williams, Alex Acuna, and Al Foster, among others. Ms. Horn’s latest album, I Remember Miles, dedicated to her mentor and friend, was released in June 1998.
